If you need more detail on how to perform the work described on this site, I strongly recommend EVERY Volkswagen owner has a repair manual for his model of VW.

INSTRUCTIONS:

The aircooled VW engine gland nut requires about 240 foot pounds of torque. Most of us do not have a torque wrench that will handle this. Solution - I used a 3/4" drive breaker bar with a 5 foot pipe that fits over the bar. Stand on a bathroom scale and push, or lift on the pipe until your weight is increased or reduced 50 pounds. That gets you pretty damn close. My engine ran flawlessly. I originally published this hint in the NH VW Club newsletter in the late '80's. Hope this helps someone!
