Removing the Throttle Body of a 12v VR6 is the first step to many other repairs such as removing the intake manifold, head, replacing timing chains, installing headers and anything that requires getting the intake manifold off.
Remove Air Intake Tube:
The first step is to remove the Air Intake Tube from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor to the Throttle Body. The intake tube is the 'U' shaped rubber hose that is directly attached to the Throttle Body. Use a screwdriver to loosen the band clamps that hold the intake tube to the MAF and Throttle Body. Remove the large vacuum hose that connects to the rear of the Intake Tube as well as the Crankcase Ventilation Hose that runs from the Valve Cover to the Intake Tube and the 2 in connector on it. Lift out the Air Intake Tube and set aside.
Disconnect Throttle Cable:
The Throttle Cable can be disconnected by removing the throttle cable tension clip and pulling the cable housing out (towards the front of the car) until the housing has cleared the bracket enough to gently pry the rubber grommet out of the bracket. Then use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the clip that holds the throttle cable to the throttle body.
Disconnect Coolant Lines:
There are two small coolant lines running to the Throttle Body. These are to prevent icing on severe cold weather starts before the engine temperature has warmed up. Use a pair of pliers to loosen and slide back the hose clamps. Have a towel under the hoses ready to catch a few drops. There should not be too much coolant coming out on such a high location. Remove the hoses from the Throttle Body.
Disconnect Idle Control Valve & TPS:
On OBDI engines you will need to disconnect the Idle Control Valve. Loosen the hose clamps on the hoses that feed the idle control valve and remove the hose from the Throttle Body. Next disconnect the wiring connector from the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). The Throttle Body should be disconnected from everything that attaches to it except the bolts holding it to the manifold. If there is anything else still attached, disconnect it now.
Remove the Throttle Body:
There are four (4) allen head bolds that hold the Throttle Body to the intake manifold. Use a allen socket on a ratchet with a six inch extension or a 'L' shaped allen key to remove all 4 bolts. Gently tap the Throttle Body if the gasket is sticking to separate the pieces.
Install is the reverse of removal.
