This guide give a overview of replaceing the waterpump on a VR6 equiped VW car.

Before this procedure can be followed, you should drain the coolant. Remove the lower radiator hose and drain into a container. Also remove the drain plug on the water pipe on the front of the block, under the intake manifold. It can be reached with a long flathead screwdriver from under the car. A flashlight or shoplight might help!

1. Remove Air Box
Disconnect intake tube, disconnect MAF, disconnect air pump id needed, remove rubber bands holding airbox in, lift out air box.

2. Remove Belt Tensioner and Pully
Release tension on serpentine belt. Slip off the belt. Remove the tensioner's 3 bolts and lift out the tensioner.

3. Loosen Lower Motor Mount
Under the radiator, looking up from the ground, is the lower motor mount. Remove the bolts on the bottom side to allow the engine to be lifted.

4. Lift Engine
Using a jack and a block of wood to protect the oilpan, slowly lift the engine up. The VR6 is pretty heavy, so make sure your jack and block are secured well and not wobbling. Lift engine until water pump will clear the frame. The water pump will be removed into the location of the airbox.

5. Remove Water Pump
There are 3 bolts to remove here. Take them out. Pull and wiggle the water pump out by the pully. Wipe out any junk in the water pump housing area. Clean the mating surfaces well.

6. Install New Pump
Make sure the gasket is placed properly, and bolt in the new pump. Re-install the belt and tensioner, reconnect the airbox, let the engine down and bolt the motor mount back into place.

7. Refill with NEW coolant of YOUR CHOICE. Flush if changing brands or formulas.

8. DRIVE!
